Two Days. One Night. A Different Kind of Rider Development.
Some riding skills can’t be properly developed in a classroom or during a short loop around familiar roads.
The MotoWales 2-Day Wales Rider Development & Touring Experience takes rider coaching onto the road and turns it into a genuine overnight motorcycle journey.
Starting from MotoWales HQ in Ammanford, we’ll spend two days travelling through Wales, using a variety of roads, environments and situations to develop both your roadcraft and real-world touring skills.
We’ll stay overnight before continuing the development journey on day two and returning to MotoWales.
This isn’t simply a guided motorcycle tour.
And it isn’t two days spent riding around the same training area.
It’s a structured rider development experience built around the journey itself.
What we’ll develop
Throughout the two days we’ll work on areas including:
- Observation and forward planning
- Positioning for safety, stability and view
- Bend assessment and cornering
- Appropriate use of speed
- Gear selection and acceleration
- Overtaking and decision-making
- Hazard perception and risk management
- Smooth and progressive riding
- Riding unfamiliar roads
- Reading changing road environments
- Group riding techniques
- Maintaining safe spacing within a group
- Navigation and route management
- Motorcycle and luggage preparation
- Fuel and journey planning
- Communication within a touring group
- Managing concentration and fatigue
- Riding in changing weather and road conditions
The objective isn’t to make you ride faster.
It’s to help you become a safer, smoother, more confident and better-prepared motorcyclist.
Enhanced Rider Scheme
Where appropriate, we’ll incorporate the principles of the DVSA Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS) into your development.
ERS provides qualified riders with an opportunity to have their riding professionally assessed and identify areas that could benefit from further development.
Your riding throughout the experience gives us considerably more opportunity to observe how you deal with different roads and situations than a short assessment route alone.
Where the relevant requirements are met, we can discuss completion of the Enhanced Rider Scheme as part of your programme.
Advanced Riding Principles
We’ll also introduce and develop established advanced road-riding principles.
These can include:
- The System of Motorcycle Control
- Information, position, speed, gear and acceleration
- Observation links
- Planning beyond the immediate hazard
- Positioning for safety and view
- Appropriate progress
- Restraint and decision-making
- Overtaking
- Developing a systematic approach to unfamiliar roads
This isn’t an advanced riding test.
Instead, we’ll use advanced principles practically, explaining why they work and when they should be applied.
Touring Skills
Being a good road rider is only part of becoming a good touring rider.
Travelling for an entire day introduces additional considerations that aren’t always apparent during a short recreational ride.
We’ll look at areas such as:
- Preparing yourself and your motorcycle
- Loading and luggage
- Route planning
- Navigation
- Fuel planning
- Group management
- Breaks and hydration
- Fatigue
- Weather
- Communication
- What to do when plans change
The overnight stay also creates an opportunity to review the day’s riding in a relaxed environment before applying what we’ve discussed the following morning.
Riding as a Group
Group riding requires discipline.
We’ll cover how MotoWales manages groups and how individual riders can contribute to keeping a group safe without feeling pressured to maintain somebody else’s pace.
You’ll develop an understanding of:
- Group formation
- Rider spacing
- Junction management
- Keeping the rider behind in sight
- Overtaking within a group
- Regrouping
- Communication
- What to do if separated
- Maintaining your own safe riding decisions
Nobody should ever feel they need to ride beyond their ability to stay with the group.
Day One – Develop & Depart
We’ll meet at MotoWales HQ in Ammanford for introductions, motorcycle checks and a briefing.
We’ll discuss your experience, objectives and any areas of your riding you’d particularly like to develop.
Once underway, we’ll progressively introduce coaching throughout the journey.
There will be regular stops for feedback, discussion and demonstrations where appropriate.
Rather than following you for ten minutes and producing a list of faults, we’re interested in understanding how you ride over an entire journey.
By the time we reach our overnight destination, we’ll have experienced a substantial range of roads and riding situations.
The Evening
After checking into our accommodation, we’ll review the day’s riding.
This gives us an opportunity to discuss:
- What went well
- What you’ve changed
- What still needs development
- Touring observations from the day
- The plan for day two
It’s an important part of the experience because development doesn’t stop when the motorcycles are parked.
Day Two – Consolidate & Progress
After breakfast and preparing the motorcycles, we’ll head out again.
Day two is about taking what you learned on day one and making it consistent.
We’ll introduce different roads and situations, revisit development points and progressively encourage you to take greater ownership of your planning and decision-making.
The route will ultimately bring us back towards MotoWales HQ, where we’ll conclude with a final review.
Accommodation
One night’s accommodation is included.
Our intention is to use good-quality motorcycle-friendly accommodation in Wales, with single-room accommodation wherever specified for the particular course date.

More Than a Training Course
The aim is that you finish the experience not simply having been told how to ride better, but having spent two days actually applying those principles during a genuine motorcycle journey.

The adventure starts with better riding.
